Dropbunny – IO

Melbourne’s Dropbunny may be one of the biggest bands around, literally. The seven piece outfit release their second album ‘IO’ which houses an astonishing 18 tracks.

Dropbunny are one of those bands that are hard to categorise, but unless you like your music heavy and hard hitting it is best to steer well clear of this bunch of Aussies. Their lyrics are angry and cynical and are definitely not for the fainthearted.

Dropbunny’s music is a kind of all over the place, just as you find yourself settling into a particular style, they do a quick switch of musical stylings to shake things up. There are some consistencies though; their music is harsh, hard-hitting and intelligent.

‘Jumped’ was the most surprising song on the album. A beautiful acoustic track with clean vocals, it shouldn’t sit well with the rest of the album, but somehow it does. Of course, in true Dropbunny style it doesn’t stay that way and about half way through it turns into a mass of electric weirdness. It’s almost as if the band became bored while recording the track and started on something completely different; I like it though.

The song titles thought up by this eclectic bunch are also pretty entertaining; ‘Irredeemably Fucked’, ‘Portrait Of A Young Man As A Shithead’ and ‘Gimp Man Cometh’ are just a few highlights, and should act as a warning to those who are easily offended.

The music heard on Dropbunny’s ‘IO’ won’t be to everyone’s taste, but I have a feeling that that won’t phase this crazy bunch of Australians. While this album is long, it is definitely entertaining and if you’re looking at given a relatively unknown band a chance; Dropbunny are the way to go.
